There was a time when Zainab Sulaimanzadah could neither read nor write and she made do with an old video recorder motor to make jewellery from stones.

Today she heads the Qultaq Precious Stone Association and supports her family of 17 with the salary she earns.

The young Afghan woman is one of altogether 880 young career starters who – together with experienced craftspeople – have undergone training in working with precious stones and creating jewellery in Balkh Province in recent years.

Früher konnte Zainab Sulaimanzadah weder lesen noch schreiben und nutzte den Motor eines alten Videorekorders, um aus Steinen Schmuck zu fertigen.

Heute leitet sie den Edelsteinverband Qultaq und ernährt mit ihrem Gehalt ihre 17-köpfige Familie.

Die Afghanin ist eine von insgesamt 880 jungen Berufsanfängern, aber auch erfahrenen Handwerkern, die in den letzten Jahren an Schulungen zur Edelsteinverarbeitung und Schmuckanfertigung in der Provinz Balkh aus- und fortgebildet wurden.
