Sepsis – colloquially also referred to as “ blood poisoning ” – is the third leading cause of death in Germany.
A patient with sepsis immediately receives treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, a therapy that is not always optimal.
Broad-spectrum antibiotics are used in this case, because considerable time is required to identify the causative pathogens and their possible antibiotic resistances, and this delay in the onset of treatment would increase the threat to the patient ’ s life.

In the collaborative project “ Aeskulap ”, scientists of the Fraunhofer institutes FIT, IMPS, ILT, and ITEM are developing a technology that will allow faster identification of pathogens and quicker testing for resistances – to enable rapid and safe treatment of sepsis patients in the future.
