Der Akademische Senat ist an allen wichtigen Entscheidungen der Universität Hamburg beteiligt, z.B. an der Wahl und Abwahl der Präsidentin oder des Präsidenten sowie an der Bestellung des Hochschulrats.
Er bestätigt Vizepräsidentinnen und Vizepräsidenten und erlässt Richtlinien, wählt die Gleichstellungs- und Behindertenbeauftragten.
