- En Gran Bretaña, las personas que se han distinguido por sus méritos en favor de su país, son distinguidas con el honor de pasar a formar parte de la knighthood (nobleza) y reciben el título de Sir delante de su nombre, por ejemplo, Sir John Smith. La mujer de un Sir recibe el tratamiento de Lady, por ejemplo, Lady Smith (y se tiene que dirigir uno a ella de esta manera). Si se les quiere nombrar simultáneamente entonces se utilizaría la fórmula de Sir John and Lady Smith. A partir del año 1917 también una mujer puede ser distinguida por sus méritos. En ese caso recibe el título de Dame, por ejemplo, Dame Mary Smith.
