In the city of Hannover this programme, practised worldwide, was introduced in conjunction with the local Agenda 21 in 1999 for the first time in Northern Germany.
The Landeshauptstadt followed the suggestion of the local Agenda 21-work group “Work” to introduce a “suitable advisory system to achieve an ecological optimisation of companies and organisations in Hannover”.
In 2000 the first round of ÖKOPROFIT began in Hannover.
