Aquatic emergence traps are cage-like or tent-like structures used to capture aquatic insects such as chironomids, caddisflies, mosquitoes, and odonates upon their transition from aquatic nymphs to terrestrial adults.
The study found the banded darter prefers chironomids over the mayflies (ephemeropterans) or caddisflies (trichopterans), and the fish fed more during the day than they did at night.
Consequently, dragonflies, mayflies, caddisflies and other water-seeking species actually prefer to mate, settle, swarm and oviposit upon these surfaces than available water bodies.
