Das ECRC wird vom Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin ( MDC ) und der Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin gemeinsam betrieben, mit dem Ziel, Ergebnisse der molekularen Forschung für die Verbesserung der Diagnose, Prävention und Therapie von Herz-Kreislauf- und Stoffwechselerkrankungen, Krebs sowie neurologischen Erkrankungen zu nutzen.
Grundlagenwissenschaftler und Kliniker werden im ERC in so genannten Schnittstellenlaboren an gemeinsamen Projekten arbeiten.
Das MDC hat in das Gebäude, das 2012 fertiggestellt wurde, insgesamt 19 Millionen Euro investiert.

Hauptprojekt ist die Unterstützung des Baues des AGORA Krebszentrums, in dem Forscher und Kliniker zusammenarbeiten werden.
