In Moldova, the privatisation of state-owned property began in 1991 with the first phase of large scale voucher privatisations.
In this system, the state-owned enterprises were converted into joint stock companies with the share certificates ( vouchers ) being distributed to the population.
When the mass privatisation was completed and after the Communist Party retook power in 2001, the privatisation process slowed down considerably.
