Die ursprüngliche Balkendecke Leos X. (1513-1521) wurde unter Gregor XIII. (1572-1585) durch das heutige Gewölbe ersetzt, dessen Ausmalung von Tommaso Laureti im Auftrag des Papstes ausgeführt wurde. Im mittleren Feld ist der Triumph der christlichen Religion dargestellt.
Die Arbeiten wurden 1585 unter Papst Sixtus V. (1585-1590) fertiggestellt.
