Die Gruppe der Wirbeltiere (Vertebrata) umfasst alle Tiere, die zeitlebens oder im Verlauf ihrer Embryonalentwicklung mit einer Wirbelsäule aus Knochen oder Knorpeln ausgestattet wurden, also Fische, Amphibien, Reptilien, Vögel und Säugetiere.
