Mit einer der heutigen vergleichsweise ähnlichen Paläogeographie und den global deutlich wärmeren Bedingungen ist das Neogen in idealer Weise für Fallstudien bezüglich des derzeitigen Klimawandels geeignet.
Forschungsschwerpunkte von NECLIME sind Paläoklimarekonstruktion (einschl. Entwicklung des atmosphärischen CO2 -Gehalts) und Analyse terrestrischer Ökosysteme im Neogen.
