Zunächst werden die Ionen eines zu untersuchenden Analyten nach Isolation im ersten Analysator in einer Kollisionszelle mit Gasteilchen eines Inertgases wie Stickstoff, Argon oder Helium zur Fragmentierung gebracht.
Dieser Vorgang wird als stoßinduzierte Fragmentierung bzw. CID (engl. collision-induced dissociation) bezeichnet.
Die dabei entstehenden leichteren Ionen werden anschließend in der zweiten Stufe massenspektrometrisch analysiert.
