Zusammen mit dem Facharbeitskreis „Regionale und Kommunale Entwicklung (ReKomEnt)“, der Universität Dortmund und finanziert vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) veranstaltete die GIZ im September 2009 eine internationale Tagung zum Thema „Urban-rural linkages and migration:
A potential for poverty alleviation in developing countries?“.

Ab 2004 vertraten die USA zudem die Auffassung, dass ein FMCT nicht verifizierbar sei.
