Neben den genannten thermotropen Flüssigkristallen gibt es noch lyotrope Flüssigkristalle, deren kristalline Phase von der Anwesenheit eines Lösungsmittels abhängt.
Solch ein LLC (lyotropic liquid crystal) kann dazu verwendet werden, im Nassbeschichtungsverfahren sehr dünne Polarisatoren zu erzeugen.
