On average, passengers need to wait only ten seconds before one of the lilac-and-white pods comes to a stop in front of them, and then autonomously takes them to their destination along a pre-programmed route on conventional rubber tires.
The pods charge their batteries at the stopping points and at charging strips along the route, which saves the 200 tonnes or so of carbon dioxide that were emitted by the previous shuttle buses.
Heathrow airport’s operating company has found this autonomous system to be so successful that there are plans to expand it with more than 400 pods covering Terminals 2 and 3, and possibly the entire airport plus the surrounding hotels.
