- The law of parité, passed in early 2000, stipulates that political parties should put forward an equal number of male and female candidates at all elections, from municipal to European levels. Parties failing to comply are subject to financial penalties which take the form of a reduction in their public funding. The law however only applies to communes with over 3500 inhabitants.
