The "gallglaigh" furnished the retreating plunderers with a moving line of defence from which the horsemen could make short, sharp charges, and behind which they could retreat when pursued.
During the operation, a group of panicky horsemen caused a stampede in the marching columns and the three divisions that fought were badly scattered while other soldiers deserted.
These studies provided a great deal of valuable information, debunking several myths, and the results have been useful to horsemen outside of eventing as well.
