In the days before the pocket calculator (pre 1970s), the slide rule and maths/logarithm tables were ubiquitous -- almost everyone in maths, science and engineering had an intimate working knowledge.
And so came the inventions of the pocket calculator, smaller and faster computers, and, decades later, just about everything that we use in daily life.
