- the Marseillaise (the French national anthem) - The Marseillaise has been the French national anthem since 1795. It was composed in 1792 by C.J. Rouget de Lisle as a war song for the Rhine army. It was also sung at the time of the revolution by a freedom group from Marseilles as it marched to Paris to take part in an uprising, hence the name.
